PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact optical scanner by increasing the flexibility in arranging a light source means, a deflecting means, an image formation optical system, and a synchronization detecting optical system. SOLUTION: In this invention, beams entering a beam splitting element 4, 13 is separated into a synchronization detecting beam and an image forming beam by the beam splitting element disposed in an incident optical system so that the main rays of the synchronization detecting beam B and the main rays of the image forming beam A enter separate positions on the deflecting surface of the deflecting means 6.
