PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a chopped fiber bundle and a molding material, which has good impregnating ability, fluidity and followability in molding when used as a molding material, and exhibits excellent mechanical properties when forming fiber reinforced plastic, and to provide a molding material and fiber reinforced plastics obtained by using the chopped fiber bundle. SOLUTION: The method for producing a chopped fiber bundle and a molding material includes continuously supplying a fiber bundle between a pair of rollers, with a thread path fixed, at least one of which rollers has blades arranged in the circumferential direction of the roller at equal intervals, and cutting the fiber bundle by bringing the blades attached on the roller into contact with the receiving part of the other roller, wherein the fiber bundle is cut based on the variation of the predetermined total cross-section area per unit length in the fiber oriented direction, and the molding material and fiber-reinforced plastic are provided by using the chopped fiber bundle.
