OPTICAL PICKUP DEVICE AND OPTICAL DISK DEVICE PROVIDED WITH THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup device and an optical disk device provided with the same in which reduction in size and cost is improved.

SOLUTION: The optical pickup device includes: a polarization direction converting element 1 converting a direction of linear polarization of light emitted from a blue-purple laser light source 5 irradiating first and second optical disks with light from a first direction to a second direction; a polarization direction separating element 2 transmitting or reflecting the light in accordance with the direction of the linear polarization of light transmitting through the polarization direction converting element 1 and switching an optical path of the light; a first objective lens 7 converging the light transmitting through the polarization direction separating element 2 on the first optical disk; a first objective lens 6 converging the light reflected by the polarization direction separating element 2 on the second optical disk; and a front monitor 4 detecting light quantity of the light transmitting through the polarization direction separating element 2 and controlling light quantity of the light. When converting the direction of the linear polarization of the light to the second direction, the polarization direction converting element 1 makes a part of the light incident on the polarization direction separating element 2 without converting the direction of linear polarization thereof.
