PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve image quality by reducing a delay in discharge, in an image display device such as a PDP using ultraviolet emission generated by discharge. SOLUTION: In this image display device using ultraviolet emission generated by discharge, a compound containing a metal element having a work function of not more than 3.6 eV exists in a portion other than a protective layer, an electrode, glass, and a dielectric layer in a discharge space, and as to this compound, the external quantum efficiency of visible light emission within a range of 450-780 nm due to irradiation of ultraviolet ray having a wavelength of not more than 450 nm is not less than 10%. If the work function of the compound is not more than 2.5 eV, the image quality is more effectively improved, and if it is not more than 2.2 eV, especially remarkable effect can be obtained. In addition, in this image display device using ultraviolet emission generated by discharge, a compound containing a Cs element exists in a portion other than the protective layer, the electrode, the glass, and the dielectric layer, and as to the compound containing the element, the external quantum efficiency of visible light emission within a range of 450-780 nm due to irradiation of ultraviolet ray having a wavelength of not more than 450 nm is not less than 10%.
