PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder capable of detecting the slant of a document without a special sensor for preventing the document from being damaged by carrying the document in a slant state in the automatic document feeder. SOLUTION: In this automatic document feeder having a sensor for detecting a top end of the document at around a center in a main scanning direction, the top end position of the document is detected by a means for detecting the top end of the document, and the slant amount of the document is detected based on the carrying distance of the document before the document reaches a line sensor for reading the document.
