PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an engine capable of realizing air-fuel mixture stratification and lean combustion by port injection using a normal intake port and not one for layer combustion. SOLUTION: An engine 1 is equipped with first and second intake ports 3, 4, first and second intake valves 5, 6, and first and second fuel injection valves 14, 15 for each cylinder 2. The first intake valve 5 is operated during air intake at a low load of the engine 1, in particular, and the first fuel injection valve 14 is not operated, to thereby take only air into the cylinder 2 from the first intake port 3. Besides, the second intake valve 6 is operated at the end or after completion of air intake by operation of the first intake valve 5, and the second fuel injection valve 15 is also operated, so that control of the opening/closing timing of the first and second intake valves 5, 6 and control of the fuel injection timing of the first and second fuel injection valves 14, 15 are performed so as to take a mixture of air and fuel into the cylinder 2 from the second intake port 4.
