<p>In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on chemical exchange-dependent saturation transfer (CEST), a carrier for CEST contrast agents is provided which comprises a paramagnetic chemical shift reagent and a source of protons with which the chemical shift reagent can interact, so as to provide chemically shifted protons. It is desired for a CEST contrast agent to be non-spherical, so as to allow a bulk magnetic susceptibility effect of the pool of protons within the agent to contribute to the CEST effect. Intrinsically non-spherical carriers are provided on the basis of erythrocyte ghosts.</p> |
