Disclosed is a method for selectively producing a cellulose ether derivative, which is extremely high in reaction efficiency of an organic halide compound. Specifically disclosed is a method for producing a cellulose ether derivative such as a carboxymethyl cellulose or a hydroxyethyl cellulose, wherein a low-crystalline powder cellulose having a crystallinity of not more than 50% is reacted with an organic halide compound such as ethylenechlorohydrine, a monohaloacetic acid or a salt thereof, in the presence of a base.
