The device has flat discs (26-1 - 26-3, 28-1 - 28-3) alternately and rotatably connected with a hub (22) and an idle pinion (20) by driving dogs (30, 32). The driving dogs co-operate with complementary cavities (34, 36) of the hub and the pinion. The discs contact with each other due to an axial control force exerted by a sleeve (24) so as to transmit a rotating torque from the hub to the pinion by friction. A side of each driving dog, which is in contact with a side of the corresponding cavity, is inclined with a non-null angle relative to the direction of an axis (XX') of a shaft (10).
