PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a list of thumbnail images at high speed by minimizing seek operation. SOLUTION: The recorder includes a means for creating thumbnail images, a means for recording the thumbnail images on a recording medium which can be accessed in random, a means for ensuring a continuous area of the recording medium in which a plurality of thumbnail images created by the image creation means can be recorded, and a means for controlling the image creation means, the recording means and the continuous area ensuring means, wherein the control means controls the recording means to record thumbnail images in a continuous area, and controls the continuous area ensuring means to release unused area in a continuous area partially or entirely to provide a free area when the capacity of free area of a recording medium becomes smaller than a threshold.
