PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a film forming method which can prevent a material liquid from moving toward the outer edge part during film formation to prevent the film thickness of the outer edge part from becoming larger than other parts, and an electro-optical device with high display quality. SOLUTION: The film forming method comprises the partition wall forming process for forming framelike partition walls 11 in a coating area LA, the material liquid coating process for applying a material liquid L to the coating area LA, and the drying process for drying the material liquid L. In the partition wall forming process, the side surface 12b on the center C side of the partition wall 11 is formed on the center C side from the outer edge LE, the height h of the partition wall 11 is less than a film thickness T at coating of the material liquid L and equal to or more than a film thickness t of a dried film 16.
