A cold water distribution system, for distributing "cold" water to a number of properties or dwellings 2, 4, 6, 8, comprises a preheater 12 for imparting a temperature rise to the water in a cold water main 10. Preferably, the preheater comprises a solar panel 14 and/or a heat pump 30. The preheater may also comprise a heat exchanger for extracting heat from waste water produced from the properties or from a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. Preferably, the preheater increases the temperature of the water by 5°C or less and is controlled so as not to warm the water above a limit temperature, such as 20°C or 22°C. The system may include a further main for distributing water to be used for domestic hot water, where the water in the further main may be heated by the preheater to a temperature above the limit temperature. |
