[Also in Groups XXIV and XXVII] In a marine propulsion unit in which two prime movers 1, 2 each drive a screw propeller 3, 4 through friction clutches 5, 6 and 7, 8 respectively, the clutches being hydraulically operated by pressure fluid from pumps 9, 10 each driven by its associated prime mover, one of these is started by an auxiliary motor &c. while the second is started indirectly from the first by connecting the pressure fluid supply line for its clutch to that of the other clutch so that when a cut-off valve 35 in the connecting line 36 is opened the clutch of the stationary engine connects its propeller to it and the torque due to the ship's motion rotates the second prime mover in a direction to cause it to start. The actuation of each clutch is controlled by a shuttle type valve, e.g. the valve 11 normally maintained closed by opposed springs 29, 30 acting on an intermediate flange 33 secured to the valve 11 the valve being moved to " ahead " or " astern " positions by pressure fluid applied to one or other of its ends when a pilot valve 15 is manually actuated through a cam 17. |
