The method involves setting up wireless network access by the mobile, manually portable appliance (22) at the job site in the installation and setting up a network connection to the knowledge system (2). Next, at least one search term specifying the desired, maintenance-related information is sent to the knowledge system (2) using the mobile, manually portable appliance. The knowledge system (2) then takes the at least one search term as a basis for automatically performing a search in at least the maintenance-related information for the installation to which the knowledge system (2) has access. Next, the information ascertained by the search is sent from the knowledge system (2) to the mobile, manually portable appliance (22) via the network connection.
