<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem in a multi-car system elevator wherein an emergency brake does not actuate, and a push rod breaks other mechanism of an elevator when the push rod is broken or bent because the push rod should be made long and large in the case where a speed is high, loading mass of a car is large, or a car moving distance required until the car is stopped by an emergency brake is long. <P>SOLUTION: A safety device in the multi-car system elevator comprises: rope 4a fixed to a first car 1a and moving with the first car in a hoistway; an operating piece 12a fixed to the rope while keeping a safety distance from the first car toward a second car 1b; and an emergency stopping means provided on the second car and pushed by the operating piece to press a guide rail and stop the second car.
