[Also in Group XXXIV] In known safety device for the control of motor rail cars of the kind wherein the controller has a driving shaft 6 which, to produce a quick action stoppage of the train, is geared to a shaft turning contacts 7, 8 and 10 and to produce a slow action stoppage of the train is geared to a shaft turning contacts 81 and 9, both sets of contacts when turned operating a warning horn 11 and then stopping the train (by means not shown), it is arranged that, provided one or other of voluntary contacts 12 or 13, such as a " deadman's " handle or pedal is kept depressed, and also involuntary contacts 14, such as may be operated by a brake valve, are also kept closed, the coil 5 of a solenoid on the driving shaft 6 of the controller will be kept energized to keep the control device 1 set for a slow action stoppage through contacts 81, 9, so as to stop the train after 1-2 minutes or 1-2 kilometres. If, however, the contacts 14 are open for any reason for a predetermined period, opening of the contacts 12 and 13 will bring into action a " quick motion " stoppage within for instance 5 seconds or 100 metres. Since the coil 5 of a solenoid acting to maintain shaft 6 raised will no longer be energized. In such operation reputed change-over from " slow " to " quick motion " of the controller device may take place as a result of one of the contacts 14 remaining open for more than the predetermined period when the contacts 12 or 13 are also operated, and to avoid the disturbance of the system that may take place as a result of such operation, a time delay relay 15 is arranged to maintain the coil 5 energized for the predetermined period during which the contacts 14 may be open normally before the apparatus changes to its position for a " quick motion " stoppage. In another embodiment to prevent similar repeated operation when one of the contacts 14 is left premanently open, two time delay relays are used.
