PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spin filter effect element which has large TMR at a room temperature in a low external magnetic field while a high-resistance ferromagnetic body is used as a tunnel barrier. SOLUTION: There are provided a first electrode 11 formed of a non-magnetic layer, a high-resistance ferromagnetic spinel ferrite film 12 other than magnetite on the first electrode 11, an insulating film 16 on the ferromagnetic spinel ferrite film 12, and a second electrode 13A formed of a ferromagnetic layer on the insulating film 16, which are disposed in this order. The high-resistance ferromagnetic spinel ferrite film 12 functions as a tunnel barrier dependent on spins with respect to electrons, and the insulating film 16 functions as a tunnel barrier not dependent on spins with respect to electrons and also functions to weaken magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic spinel ferrite film 12 and the ferromagnetic layer 13A as the second electrode. At a room temperature, an extremely high magnetic resistance change rate can be obtained in a low magnetic field. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
