The chain (1) has side stretching strings (4) extending along a tire flange in circumferential direction (U) in an installed condition. A continuous chain mesh (2) rests on a tire bearing surface in the condition. The mesh is connected with the side stretching strings by retaining knot areas (3) that are arranged at tire shoulders in the condition. The areas are connected with the associated strings via a lead string (5). The mesh is designed from a track string (6), a traction string (7), and a diagonal string (9), which are connected with each other under formation of closed pentagons.
