The present invention relates to a method for controlling movement of a cursor shown on a display screen using a pointing device controlled by a user, wherein the position of the cursor may be adjusted in accordance with a desired future movement trajectory. The present invention provides for the possibility to "disconnect" the actual control of the cursor from the directional user input provided by the user when controlling the pointing device. When detecting a specific indicative user action, the cursor may be "sent away" from its initial position in accordance with an estimated desired future movement trajectory, which e.g. may be based on the speed and direction detected at the time of the user action. The present invention also relates to a pointing device for entering movement parameters indicative of manually generated hand movement of a user into a computer system.
