PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spacer material for a flat display panel that can hold two substrates disposed opposing to each other with a given space, and to provide a method of manufacturing the spacer material. SOLUTION: The spacer material includes a plurality of cylindrical minute rods and a plurality of aggregates made of aggregates of fine powder of the same material as the minute rods and having a dimension larger than the average diameter of the minute rods, wherein the weight concentration of the plurality of aggregates is not more than 150 ppm. The method of manufacturing the spacer material includes: a cutting step of first coarsely cutting spun fibers made of a brittle material with scissors, a cutting machine or the like; a fine powder removing step of removing fine powder produced by cutting the fibers by using a shaking machine or the like; a pulverizing step of pulverizing the fiber after cut by using a ball mill, a vibration mill, a jet mill, a grinding machine or a stone mill; and a classification step of classifying the fiber (minute pulverized material).
