The invention relates to a method for inhibiting and/or preventing formation of cancer metastases and secondary malignant cancers by administration to a subject of an effective amount of a quaternary pyridinium salt of formula I wherein R' is selected from the group consisting of H, OH, CONH2, COCH3, R'' is selected from the group consisting of H, CH3, R''' represents H or CH3, and X- is a pharmaceutically acceptable counterion.
