PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of removing a filter membrane element, which can prevent damage of the filter membrane on removing an immersion type filter membrane module from the filtrated liquid and removing the filter membrane element. SOLUTION: The method is for removing a filter membrane element from a membrane filtration apparatus which is equipped with (1) a filter membrane module 2 including two or more flat-plate-like filter membrane elements 1 having a permeate water passage between a support member and a separation membrane and a water collection pipe 4 collecting permeate water and immersed in the membrane-filtrated liquid and (2) pipings 5 and 9 communicating with the water collection pipe and supplying the collected permeate water to a desired site. The pipings 5 and 9 are separated so as to remove the filter membrane module and the piping 5 from the membrane-filtrated liquid, and, after the permeate water remaining in the permeate water passage is discharged by suction, the filter membrane elements are removed from the filter membrane module.
