PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an auto-tensioner whose damper force can be easily changed by operation from the outside. SOLUTION: In the auto-tensioner 5, a sleeve 8 is fitted in a cylinder 7, the inside of a cylinder 7 is partitioned into a pressure chamber 11 and a reservoir chamber 12 by inserting a plunger 10 slidably into the sleeve 8, a rod 16 integrally moving with the plunger 10 is provided, a return spring 19 which biases the rod 16 in the projecting direction from the cylinder 7 is provided, and a check valve 14 is provided in an oil passage 13 which connects the pressure chamber 11 with the reservoir chamber 12. In the auto-tensioner 5, a through-hole 23 is formed in a bottom 9 of the sleeve 8, a by-pass channel 24 which connects the through-hole 23 with the reservoir chamber 12 is formed between the fitting surfaces of the sleeve 8 and the cylinder 7, and an electromagnetic switch valve operated by energizing a solenoid coil 32 is provided in the through-hole 23.
