A remote wireless monitoring system (100) for patient data, and an ambulatory system (902) for processing and transmitting physiological characteristic data are provided. An embodiment of an ambulatory system (902) includes a physiological characteristic sensor (910), a self-contained sensor processor module (912) coupled to the ambulatory physiological characteristic sensor (910), and an ambulatory data receiver device (914) coupled to the self-contained sensor processor module (912).
