PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing adhesion of a discharge product onto a charging device and an image carrier. SOLUTION: This device is equipped with an image carrier cleaning means for cleaning the surface of the image carrier in the contact state with the image carrier by being moved in a direction perpendicular to a moving direction of the image carrier. When operating a charging device cleaning means, the image carrier cleaning means moves the image carrier in a prescribed direction, and simultaneously cleans the surface of the image carrier by being moved in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction of the image carrier.
