PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an elevator car and/or a balance weight from derailing resulting from widening of the spacing of a pair of guide rails at their top end side by suppressing deflection of the top end side of any of the guide rails in the event of earthquake even in case the guide rail top ends are not secured to the wall or beam of the building. SOLUTION: A guide rail supporting structure of elevator is equipped with a pair of guide rails 1 for elevator car arranged up and down and guiding the car 6 in elevation and sinking, where the uppermost fixing place to be secured to the wall or beam 5 of the building lies below the top elevating position of the car 6, and a coupling member 9 to tie together the two guide rails 1 in a position above the top elevating position of the car 6.
