PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of enhancing contrast and responsivity to voltage with good balance. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 40 is sealed between a TFT substrate 20 and a CF substrate 30. The liquid crystal layer 40 contains liquid crystal molecules 41A held by a polymer 42A fixed to an alignment layer 22 covering the TFT substrate 20, liquid crystal molecules 41B held by a polymer 42B fixed to an alignment layer 32 covering the CF substrate 30 and liquid crystal molecules 41C positioned in an intermediate region in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer 40. A pretilt angleθ1 is imparted to the liquid crystal molecules 41A by presence of the polymer 42A and a pretilt angleθ2 smaller than the pretilt angleθ1 is imparted to the liquid crystal molecules 41B by presence of the polymer 42B.
