A method of operating a gasifier includes adjusting the composition of a coal feedstock which produces an ash with a Si+Al:Ca mass ratio of more than 2.8 so that an adjusted Si+Al:Ca mass ratio in the ash produced by the composition adjusted coal feedstock will be less than 2.8. The composition adjusted coal feedstock is gasified in a gasification zone at a gasification temperature above 700°C but below the ash fusion temperature of the coal feedstock to produce ash and a synthesis gas which includes at least CO2, CO and H2 A portion of the CO2 is captured as CaCU3 in the ash thereby reducing the CO2 concentration in the synthesis gas.
