The device has a sensor (3) i.e. laser scanner, equipped for determining a distance (D) between a rail-bound vehicle (1) and a rail-bound vehicle (2) following the rail-bound vehicle (1). An evaluation unit (4) is connected with the sensor, and receives a sensor signal containing the momentary distance. The evaluation unit regulates speed of one of the rail-bound vehicles depending on the distance contained in the sensor signal, where the distance exhibits a length such that coupling of the rail-bound vehicle (2) with the rail-bound vehicle (1) is recognized.
