A method and means of monitoring a solenoid comprises applying a voltage across a coil of the solenoid and sensing the current through the coil to provide an indication of armature movement. A characteristic of the electric current profile of a solenoid coil, such as a kick or cusp 4, when the armature moves into the coil, may be used to monitor the operational condition of a solenoid device. The solenoid armature may be directly linked to a hydraulic valve. The monitoring system may be used for remote sensing of solenoid operation in a subsea hydrocarbon valve control system with an indication of the solenoid operation being provided to a topside installation. |
