An image processing apparatus and a controlling method thereof are provided to improve a user convenience by recognizing a character representing a geographical region in a photo image, and to provide search results of the geographical information. An image preprocessor(130) transforms an image in order to enhance the character recognition rate to easily recognize characters in a photo image. A character recognition unit(140) extracts characters included in a photo image, and transforms the extracted characters to a text data recognizable by a CPU. A database(160) stores geographical information corresponding to the transformed text data. A digital signal processor(150) controls components of the digital image processing apparatus.
