A device for generating a force, includes a shock absorbing means. The device comprises a hydraulic jack 21, a load cell 29 and a lever 27 which is pivotally mounted. The jack and the load cell each engage with the lever at points lying to either side of the lever's pivot mount 28, and the lever is connectable to a force transmitting element 40. The load cell includes a biasing means, such as a spring 38, which exerts a force on the lever opposite to the force exerted thereon by the jack. In use, when an element which is being held in place by the device experiences a shock load, the shock absorbing means of the device dissipates the said shock load. The device may be used to securely hold a vehicle body on a production line (figure 2) so that when a rear axle (7) assembly is offered up to the floor pan there is no noticeable movement of the vehicle body. An engine may be installed in the vehicle at the same time as the rear axle. |
