A person authentication device and a person authentication method are provided to obtain a stable image for personal authentication, thereby performing an authentication process with high accuracy. An obtaining unit(101) obtains a high gradation image including an image of a person walking. A face detection unit(102) detects a face range in an acquired high gradation image. A gradation converting unit(103) converts a high gradation image into a low gradation image according to brightness distribution in the detected face area. A removing unit determines a brightness value of an area except for a face from the brightness distribution and removes a brightness value through the area. A characteristic extracting unit(104) extracts face characteristic information from a face area of the low gradation image. Authenticators(106,107) authenticate whether to register a person walking by comparing the extracted face characteristic information with face characteristic information of the register person.
