An apparatus for automatically detecting spelling errors and proof-correction information in an English composition learning system and a method thereof are provided to make economical the English composition learning possible and offer more detailed proof-correction information to a user by detecting the forms of generated spelling errors. In case a decision result token corresponding to a pattern is a word, a registration determining unit(310) determines whether the token is registered in a word list database and proper noun database. If the token is not registered, a un-registration checking unit(320) determines the spelling error of the token as one of a verb conversion spelling error, noun conversion spelling error, word spacing error and general spelling error by using the word list database, irregular verb conversion database and irregular noun conversion database. A proof-correction information providing unit offers the proof-correction information related to the token according to the detected error type.
