The use of a fumaric acid derivative or a mixture of fumaric acid derivatives for preparing a pharmaceutical composition for treating mitochondrial diseases wherein the fumaric acid derivative(s) is(are) selected from fumaric acid monoalkyl esters and fumaric acid dialkyl esters in the form of the free acid or a salt thereof, said mitochondrial diseases being Parkinson's syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, retinopathia pigmentosa and mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. A dosage unit of the pharmaceutical composition contains an amount of fumaric acid derivatives corresponding to 1 to 500 mg of fumaric acid.
