A bandaging material is formed from fibrous, cellulosic material which is reinforced by having areas of the material itself made non-absorbent. Preferably it is embossed to form a pattern of compressed areas and these, being rendered non-absorbent, provide the desired reinforcement. A strip may be mounted on an adhesive backing and, also to increase the absorbency of a dressing a number of layers of the material may be superimposed with the absorbent areas over each other.
