PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low power consumption and long life surface light-emitting device. SOLUTION: The surface light-emitting device of this invention comprises a first electrode 30 having a plurality of openings 35, a second electrode 10 opposed to the first electrode 30, and an organic functional layer 20 held between the first electrode 30 and the second electrode 10. The organic functional layer 20 has an organic light-emitting layer 21 consisting of an organic EL material and an organic intermediate layer 22 arranged on the first electrode 30 side of the organic light-emitting layer 21. The organic intermediate layer 22 transports the carrier injected into the organic intermediate layer 22 from the first electrode 30 side in the thickness direction of the organic intermediate layer 22, and has a low resistivity in the surface direction thereof so that it transports the carrier to the portion corresponding to the inside of the opening 35 in the organic light-emitting layer 21.
