PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a probable position of a recognition object. SOLUTION: Predetermined pattern matching is carried out on a region of an input image extracted through a search window, and the degree of the pattern matching is derived. Pattern matching is carried out multiple times while moving the search window so that each of regions extracted through the search window partially overlaps with one of the regions. The derived degree is included as the degree of the region, and as to a part of the region on which pattern matching has been repeatedly carried out multiple times as a result of carrying out pattern matching multiple times, the degree derived in each pattern matching is integrated multiple times as the degree of a part of the region.
