PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment layer nearly free from dust generated during alignment and defect due to static electricity, easy in control of alignment and a pretilt angle of a liquid crystal and having excellent alignment properties of the liquid crystal. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal aligning agent contains two or more kinds of polyamic acids including an azo group in its main chain or the derivatives thereof, wherein the two kinds of polyamic acids or the derivatives thereof with adjacent surface energy levels in which the difference in the surface energy level of a film by thermal imidization of each of the polyamic acids or the derivatives thereof is a prescribed difference. The liquid crystal alignment layer is obtained by using the liquid crystal aligning agent and aligning and imidizing the polyamic acids or the derivatives thereof by optical alignment.
