PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an elevator car holding device capable of promptly stopping lifting caused by the self-traveling of a car during the maintenance work of an elevator. SOLUTION: The elevator car holding device is provided with a base 17 having an inclined wall face 17a forming a wedge space 19 between the inclined wall face 17a and a car guide rail 7a; a movable iron plate 35 arranged so as to be engaged with the first support face 27c of a first guide member 27 and the second support face 30c of a second guide member 30; a first coil spring 40; an electromagnet 41; a holding member 46 fixed to rotating members 45a, 45b; suspending members 34a, 34b for making the holding member 46 contact with and separate from the car guide rail 7a when the movable iron plate 35 is held in a maintenance operation mode position and a car lifting/lowering permitting position; and a maintenance operation control board 60 for supplying an electric current to the electromagnet 41. When the movable iron plate 35 is in the maintenance operation mode position and the car 4 is lifted, the holding member 46 bites into a space between the car guide rail 7a and the inclined wall face 17a.
