There is provided a display device, the contrast ratio of which can be improved. The display device (1) displays an image by illuminating a display panel (2) with light from a light source (24). The display device comprises a transparent EL sheet (30) disposed on the backside of the display panel (2) and being transparent in a non-emission period, a reflection sheet (40) for reflecting the light from the light source (24) toward the display panel (2), a display control unit (18a) for controlling image display on the display panel (2), and a light emission control unit (18b) for controlling the light emission of the transparent EL sheet (30). The light emission control unit (18b) makes at least a part of the area of the transparent EL sheet (30) emit light in correspondence to the image display of the display panel (2) controlled by the display control unit (18a) and illuminates the display panel (2) with the emitted light and, in addition, with the light from the light source (24) and the reflected light from the reflection sheet (40).
