The method involves accomplishing an emergency resetting in an actual or overheated starting clutch during a starting process in a higher gear. Clutch temperature is continuously monitored during the starting process in the higher gear. A timer is started when the clutch temperature exceeds a given parameterized threshold value. The resetting is accomplished in the gear when the time seized by the timer exceeds an applicable time. The resetting is accomplished independent of whether an automatic transmission is operated in an automatic mode or in a manual mode.
