First and second target detection bodies arranged spaced apart from each other in the direction of movement of an elevator car are placed in either one of a hoistway and the car, and first and second detectors are arranged in the other. The first detector has a magnetic sensor provided with a first detection region, and the second detector has an optical sensor provided with a second detection region. The first and second target detection bodies can pass the first and second detection regions, respectively, when the car moves. When the car is within a predetermined section in which a door can be opened and closed, the first target detection body is inserted in the first detection region, and when the car is within a predetermined landing section which is set within the section in which the door can be opened and closed, the second target detection body is inserted in the second detection region. The magnetic sensor can detect only whether or not the first target detection body, out of the first and second target detection bodies, has been inserted in the first detection region. The optical sensor can detect whether or not each of the first and second target detection bodies has been inserted in the second detection region.
