A stripping composition for use in removing dried, architectural coatings from a substrate to which they are adhered, said coatings containing polymeric binder, the composition comprising, on a weight basis calculated on the total weight of the stripping composition,
i) from 8.5 to 40% of a solvent mixture capable of softening and lifting the binder from the substrate
ii)from 15 to 90% of a particulate inorganic material
iii) from 0.1 to 1.5% of a polymeric thickener material
wherein the composition is free of film forming polymer other than the thickener.
