The system has an obstacle detector (8) e.g. telemetric or laser detector such as pre-cash sensor, for detecting the presence of an obstacle at the front of a motor vehicle. A connection unit connects the obstacle detector to a displacement control (7) of an elliptical shaped headlight (9). The displacement control controls the displacement of a lighting module (3). The displacement control has a dynamic bending light system that laterally displaces the lighting module, and a correction or compensation system that vertically displaces the lighting module. An independent claim is also included for a method of protecting a pedestrian during an impact of the pedestrian against a motor vehicle.
