A packaging machine for packaging contents in packs, which are produced from at least two sheets, includes a gas evacuation and gas flashing system with a suction system for extracting gas, in particular atmospheric air, from the packs, and a gas supply for supplying one or more gases such as nitrogen into the packs, and a pack sealing system for sealing the packs once the gas has been supplied. So that a predetermined gas flashing can be performed and the gas flashing is not performed whilst the packs are being evacuated, the pack sealing system closes the interior of the packs in relation to the suction by pressing the two sheets together prior to the gas being supplied.
