A green light emitting phosphor and a light emitting device are provided. The green light emitting phosphor includes a composition represented by the formula Sr1.8-nMnEu0.2Si3O8.2SrCl2. M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ca, Ba, and Mg, and n is in a range of 0<n<=1.0. The light emitting device includes a semiconductor light emitting element which emits ultraviolet or short-wavelength visible light; and the green light emitting phosphor.
