PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve improvement of throughput and prolongation of service lives of consumables by controlling timing of cleaning. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an image forming means for forming an image on recording material, a speed switching means for switching image forming speed in the image forming means between a high speed mode and a low speed mode, and a cleaning means for cleaning a part of constitution of the image forming means, and includes a control means for controlling the cleaning means to perform cleaning after waiting for switching the mode to the high speed mode by the speed switching means when it is determined to be necessary to perform cleaning by the cleaning means in the low speed mode.
