A high-light-efficiency and low-height optical head. The optical head includes a slider which moves relatively to a recording medium on and along the surface of the recording medium and a linear light guide which guides light from a light source to the recording medium. The optical head comprises a radial gradient index lens in which the light guided by the linear light guide forms a light spot by falling on one end surface and being emitted from the other end surface having a positive refracting power and focused on a position away from the other end surface, a deflecting means for deflecting the light emitted from the other end surface to a position between the other end surface of the radial gradient index lens and the position at which the light spot is formed, and an optical waveguide which is provided to penetrate the slider in a direction crossing the direction of the relative movement and which the light deflected by the deflecting means enters.
