A lathe or like tool comprises a holder 11 having a recess 12 which supports a shim or shims 13, a chip breaker 18, and a throw away tip 16 having cutting edges 30, 31. The tip is clamped by a clamp 21 and the breaker by a clamp 20, both of which may be integral with the holder. The tip and shim are made of sintered carbide &c., and the length of the tip L, Fig. 11, is at least six times its thickness t and at least four times its width B, and the clamped length L-L<SP>1</SP> is less than 50% L. The tip may have cutting edges on all four sides, and clamp 20 may be integral with breaker 18. In a modification, Fig. 9, shim 13, clamp 20, and chip breaker 18 are replaced by members 25, 26 secured to the holder by a screw. |
